No, I can't.

Occasionally I find myself with 5 free minutes of class time. Often the kids like to play English language games and joke around. Recently, I've discovered the joys of "free talk" or rather "guided talk."

The final section of our chapter was a grammar segment featuring the key verb "to make." The kids had to interview a partner, following a list of prescribed sentences. "Sam, can you make a snowman?" asked Tom . "Yes, I can!" Sam stated proudly.

After they finished up, I wrote the sentence structure on the board and asked the kids to create their own sentence. Bright Sam quickly asked if they could interview me and I agreed. Little did I know that the questioning could fill 5 minutes of on task speaking for my little gigglers.

Student: Teacher, can you make a Earth??? -- Erin: Um, no, I can't.
Student: Teacher, can you make a Tom? -- Erin: Um, no, I can't.
Student: Teacher, can you make a jacket, a candle, a board, a clock, a shoe?

And the best one .... "Teacher can you make a Jake???" Hmmm, what kind of make? Ha, ha....I just said, "No, I can't."
